Hawai'i course of the week

Waikoloa Beach Resort Beach Course
No. 12 I 479 yards, par 5

Carved through the magnificent lava flows along Anaeho'omalu Bay, Waikoloa Beach Resort's Beach and Kings' courses are golfers' avenues into an area steeped in history and legend.

Designed in 1981 by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the Beach Course is purposefully relaxed. The resort-style layout is highlighted by the spectacular ocean-front par-five 12th. This dramatic hole has lava throughout and runs along the Pacific Ocean to a point where views of breaching whales and vistas of other Hawaiian Islands are not uncommon. Your tee shot must avoid two strategically placed fairway bunkers, then you must decide to lay up or hit your second shot to the green sitting on a peninsula protected by lava, sand bunkers and the splashing surf. Your efforts are rewarded as you putt on a green framed by palm trees with a magnificent view of the world's largest water hazard ... the Pacific Ocean. The 12th fairway was configured around an ancient Hawaiian fishing shelter. At one time this enclosure probably provided shelter for weary Hawaiian fishermen.

Golf packages combining the Beach and Kings' courses are available, and preferred reservations are offered to on-property guests of Hilton Waikoloa Village, Outrigger Waikoloa Beach and vacation condominiums at Waikoloa Beach Resort. Courses are managed by Troon Golf.
