PGA TOUR

  • Event: Worldcom Classic
  • Site: Hilton Head Island, S.C.
  • Schedule: Today-Sunday.
  • Course: Harbour Town Golf Links (6,976 yards, par 71).
  • Purse: $3.5 million. Winner's share: $630,000.
  • Television: The Golf Channel and Fox Sports Net (Today-tomorrow, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) and CBS (Saturday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-noon).
  • Last year: Stewart Cink, five strokes behind Ernie Els with 12 holes remaining, rallied to beat Tom Lehman by two strokes. Els tied for third.
  • Last week: Tiger Woods won the Masters for a sweep of the four professional majors. Woods, also the 1997 winner, has won his last three starts. David Duval finished second, two strokes back.
  • Notes: Woods is skipping the tournament. ... Davis Love III, seeking a tournament-record fifth victory, tops the field along with two-time winner Tom Watson, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, Greg Norman, Mark Calcavecchia and John Daly. Young Australian stars Aaron Baddeley and Adam Scott received foreign exemptions from PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem. ... The official tournament name is the Worldcom Classic — The Heritage of Golf. ... The Houston Open is next week, followed by the the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic.

LPGA TOUR

  • Site: Los Angeles.
  • Schedule: Today-Saturday.
  • Course: Wilshire Country Club (6,531 yards, par 71).
  • Purse: $800,000. Winner's share: $120,000.
  • Television: ESPN2 (Today-tomorrow, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.).
  • Last year: South Korea's Grace Park beat Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst by a stroke in Murrels Inlet, S.C.
  • Last event: Swedish star Annika Sorenstam won the Nabisco Championship on March 25, her third straight victory and first major title since the 1996 U.S. Open.
  • Notes: Sorenstam, chasing Nancy Lopez's 1978 record of five straight victories, is attempting to become the third player to win four consecutively scheduled events. Mickey Wright accomplished the feat in 1962 and 1963, and Kathy Whitworth matched it in 1969. ... The event moves to Los Angeles after four years in South Carolina. ... The official tournament name is The Office Depot Hosted by Amy Alcott. Alcott has 29 victories in her Hall of Fame career. ... The Longs Drugs Challenge is next week in Lincoln, Calif.

SENIOR PGA TOUR

  • Event: The Tradition
  • Site: Scottsdale, Ariz.
  • Schedule: Today-Sunday.
  • Course: Desert Mountain, Cochise Course (6,998 yards, par 72).
  • Purse: $1.7 million. Winner's share: $255,000.
  • Television: ESPN (Today-tomorrow, 10 a.m.-noon) and ABC (Saturday, 10 a.m.-noon; Sunday, 9 a.m.-noon).
  • Last year: Tom Kite won his first senior title, beating Tom Watson on the sixth hole of a playoff. Larry Nelson was eliminated on the second extra hole.
  • Last event: Andy North and Jim Colbert successfully defended their Legends of Golf title April 1, holding off David Graham and Bruce Fleisher by three strokes.
  • Notes: Watson is skipping the tournament, the first major of the senior season, to play in the PGA Tour's Worldcom Classic. ... Jack Nicklaus won the 1990 event in his first year of eligibility and added titles in 1991, '95 and '96. He designed the Cochise Course. ... The Las Vegas Senior Classic is next week, followed by the Bruno's Memorial Classic in Birmingham, Ala.
