Joke prompts Djou to seek campaign contributions

Associated Press

HONOLULU — A tongue-in-cheek comment about Rep. Charles Djou's birthplace is leading him to claim he's being attacked and to send out a campaign solicitation.

According to The Hill newspaper, which covers Washington, Democratic Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts on Tuesday urged reporters to demand Djou's birth certificate as Djou was sworn in to represent Hawaii's 1st Congressional District.

The newspaper reported Frank's comment was clearly a sarcastic reference to those who claim President Obama was born in a foreign nation.

Djou on Friday posted a note on his Facebook page saying he was born in Los Angeles. He contends Frank's comment is an example of Democrats "already launching attacks" and asked for campaign donations of up to $100.
