Police chief to tackle tough job list at HPD
It's an exciting time for newly appointed Police Chief Louis Kealoha, but a stressful one, too. Considering the fiscal crunch that looms for the Honolulu Police Department, as for any city agency, the first marks his administration must make are unlikely to spark celebrations. More »

Furloughs
The mess regarding teacher furloughs illustrates that the current system is broken and dysfunctional. There is absolutely no accountability by any of the parties involved. This is a direct result of the collective bargaining system that has been strengthened over the years to produce this quagmire. More »

A rogue still rough and unreadyYou have to hand it to Sarah Palin. I don't mean you have to hand her the 2012 nomination. Nor do you have to hand her the $24.64 I overpaid for "Going Rogue." But let us give credit where credit card is due. Remember back in the 1990s when Hillary Clinton described herself as the Rorschach test for how people felt about the women's movement? More »

Education Stimulus Funds
The state of Hawaii got a black eye last week — again — over its "Furlough Fridays" approach to closing the public-school budgetary gap. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Hawaii's chances of scoring the remaining stimulus funds in the "Race to the Top" competitive grants program are diminished by the agreement sacrificing 17 classroom days from the academic calendar. Now state lawmakers and the Lingle administration are wrestling over ways to restore those days. Lawmakers and education officials are requesting that some stimulus funds that the administration already allocated for special purposes be redirected to buying back some of the furlough days.
