Police yesterday identified a motorcyclist killed in a collision Sunday as John M. Shields, 62, of Kealakekua.

Hawai'i County police said the motorcycle and a pickup truck collided about 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Route 190 and Mahilani Drive in North Kona.

Police a 31-year-old Kailua, Kona, man driving a Toyota pickup was traveling north on Route 190 when he started to make a left turn onto Mahilani Drive.

The motorcycle operator, also northbound, tried to overtake the truck in a no-passing zone and the vehicles collided.

Fire rescue personnel took Shields to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.
