Body of free diver identified

Advertiser Staff

The 21-year-old free diver who died of an apparent drowning Saturday off Kaena Point has been identified as Cullen Santos, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office.

County lifeguards on personal watercraft, firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard were searching when Santos' body was discovered at 1:30 p.m. on the Waialua side of Kaena Point.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at 1:57 p.m. Saturday.

He is believed to have been free diving with another man.

Free diving has led to deaths on Oahu before, including that of photographer Sergio Goes, who died in 2008 in a free-diving accident.

An autopsy will be performed today to determine the cause of death.
