Hawaii 'Click It or Ticket' campaign kicks off tonight

Honolulu police will be at Ala Moana Boulevard and Channel Street near Restaurant Row tonight to kick off the national "Click It or Ticket" seatbelt campaign.

The campaign runs from today until June 6.

Tonight's event lasts from 6 to 8 p.m.

Last year, police officers around the state issued 2,456 citations for seatbelt violations.

According to figures released by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Hawaii was second in the nation in seatbelt compliance last year at 97.9 percent.

Michigan led the nation with 98 percent of its motorists buckling up, followed by Hawaii and Oregon (96.6 percent).

Wyoming had the lowest rate in the nation at 67.6 percent, followed by New Hampshire (68.9 percent) and South Dakota (72.1 percent).
