Motorcyclist killed, 2 men arrested in crash on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

A 62-year-old Kealakekua man is dead today and two men are under arrest after leaving the scene of a crash between a motorcycle and pickup truck last night in North Kona.

Hawaii County police say the collision took place about 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Route 190 and Mahilani Drive.

They say a 31-year-old Kailua, Kona, man driving a Toyota pickup was headed north on Route 190 when he started to make a left turn onto Mahilani Drive.

The motorcycle operator, also north-bound, tried to overtake the truck in a no-passing zone and the vehicles collided.

Fire rescue personnel took the motorcycle operator to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the man was not wearing a helmet.

The man's name is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of his family. An autopsy has been ordered for today.

An initial report filed last night by Hawaii County firefighters indicated the accident was a single-vehicle crash.

Police this morning said the driver of the truck and a 26-year-old male passenger, also from Kailua, Kona, abandoned the vehicle on Mahilani Drive and walked away from the scene.

Police located the men at a home in the Kona Palisades subdivision and arrested both — the driver for negligent homicide and driving under the influence, the other man for consuming or possessing intoxicating liquor while a passenger in a motor vehicle.

Both men are being held pending further investigation.
