Kolten Wong batted 4 for 5 with an RBI triple to lead Hawai'i over San Jose State, 5-3, today to take the opener of the Western Athletic Conference four-game series at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

Sacramento State beat Fresno State, 12-2, so UH still needs to win one or have the Hornets lose one to secure a spot on the WAC tournament.

Josh Slaats (5-3) went five innings, allowing two runs, five hit and four walks with four strikeouts for the Rainbows (27-24 overall, 10-11 WAC).

Alex Capaul allowed an unearned run in 2 2/3 innings and Lenny Linsky pitched the final 1 1/3 perfect innings for his 10th save for UH.

Blake McFarland (6-4) was charged with three runs, seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in seven innings for the Spartans (20-33, 8-13).

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the third without the benefit of a hit, nor with a batted ball out of the infield.

Richie Johnson and Craig Hertler each walked to start the inning and advanced on Tim Quiery's sacrifice. Johnson scored when Karson Klauer grounded out to short.

The Rainbows tied it in the fourth. Jeffrey Van Doornum led off with a walk and took second on David Freitas' single. Both advanced on Greg Garcia's sacrifice and Van Doornum scored on Collin Bennett's sacrifice fly to center.

Hawai'i took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Chase Koissian led off with a single and Matt Roquemore was hit by a pitch. Kolten Wong's bunt single to third loaded the bases to set up Pi'ikea Kitamura's sacrifice fly to right to give UH a 2-1 lead. Van Doornum's RBI single made it 3-1.

San Jose State pulled to within 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Quiery led off by getting hit by a pitch. Two outs later, went to second on Andy Sofranac's single and scored on Jason Martin's single.

The Rainbows cushioned their lead in the eighth when Matt Roquemore drew a two out walk and scored on Wong's triple to right.

The Spartans pulled to 4-3 in the bottom of th eighth. Sofranac led off with a single against Capaul. An out later, Sofranac took second when pinch hitter Tyler Christian chopped out to short. Nick Borg singled to first to move Sofranac to third, where he scored on first baseman Kevin Macdonald's throwing error on the player. Capaul was pulled for Lenny Linsky, who got the last out to end the inning.

Hawai'i got in insurance run in the ninth. Freitas singled with one out against David Wayne Russo, who then walked Garcia and Bennett to load the bases. Macdonald's RBI single made it 5-3.
