Strip's nice but The Cal's home

By Rodney Lee

Most of you have probably heard of the home computer debate: PC or Mac? Well, here on Vegas, baby! the debate is The Strip or Downtown — where do you prefer to stay?

There are pros and cons for each, but for the most part it's just personal preference.

We always stay Downtown, at The California Hotel & Casino, to be specific. Mostly because we feel comfortable there and they take good care of us.

The casino isn't so big that we get lost trying to find each other, and we know where each other's favorite machines are. And if our luck isn't happening at The Cal, we simply stroll on over the walkway to Main Street Station to play. It's all right there.

If we've eaten too much and feel the need to walk off some of the meal, we'll take a leisurely walk over to the Fremont mall and maybe stop over at The Fremont Hotel & Casino to try our luck. Plus, having the Boyd Gaming B Connected card linking up the three casinos to accumulate points also helps.

Now on the other side of the coin, or chip, I can see how staying on The Strip can be quite exciting too. Most of the big casinos are in walking distance of each other, there are a ton of different restaurants to visit, lots of shows to see, and you're mixed in with travelers from all over the world. You might even see a celebrity or two.

One time when Paula and I stayed at The Gold Coast Hotel & Casino — it's not exactly on The Strip — we saw Ray Charles and his entourage walking through the casino.

And I'm sure the rooms and amenities at The Strip hotels are much nicer than the older Downtown hotels. But again, it's just a matter of preference: Do you enjoy dining at Ruth's Chris Steak House or are you content with eating at Zippy's?
