HPU loses first game at NCAA II West baseball tournament

Right-hander Tim Shibuya pitched a five-hit shutout over eight innings to lift UC San Diego to a 12-0 victory over Hawai'i Pacific on the first day of the NCAA Division II West Region Baseball Tournament at Compton, Calif.

The Sea Warriors (37-11) play the loser of tonight's Cal State Dominguez Hills-Chico State, at 11 a.m. tomorrow Hawai'i time in the four-team, double-elimination tournament.

The Tritons pounded HPU starter Caelen O'Meara (6-2) for seven earned runs in 2 2/3 innings, and finished with 15 hits.

Shibuya struck out five and walked none. Elias Tuma pitched the ninth, allowing no hits.

Kyle Saul and Brandon Gregorich each had three hits and three runs for the Tritons, who improved to 49-7.
