Calip, Isagawa shoot to leads in state golf

Big Island champion Nainoa Calip and Maui champion Cassy Isagawa are in the lead after the first round of the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA State Golf Championships.

The tournament concludes today, with the girls playing at Turtle Bay Resort's Fazio Course and the boys at the Palmer Course.

Calip, a Kamehameha-Hawai'i senior who will play for the University of Hawai'i in the fall, shot the day's only sub-par round, firing a 1-under 71 with four birdies. He is one shot ahead of Campbell's Rudy Cabalar .

Defending state champion Lorens Chan, an 'Iolani sophomore, shares seventh after shooting a 74. He is a shot back of Punahou's Brian Lee and Bradley Shigezawa, Saint Louis' Thayer Schmitz and 'Iolani's Corey Kozuma.

Isagawa, a Baldwin senior, went out in the first group and fired a 1-over 73. After taking double-bogey on the opening hole, she birdied the second and parred the final 16. Isagawa is a shot ahead of Kaua'i's Kelli Oride and Waiākea's Nani Yanagi.

Baldwin and Punahou are tied for first in the girls team standings at 229 (best three-of-four scores). Waiākea trails by 11 shots and Kaua'i (243) is fourth. Punahou was led by Alina Ching and Marissa Suehiro, who each shot 75.

Punahou also leads the boys team standings after shooting 299 (best four-of-five), behind Lee and Shigezawa. Moanalua (305) is next and defending state champion 'Iolani (309) is third.

Golfers go out from 7:30 a.m. today. There is no admission charge.
