Big Island police warn of mail scam

Associated Press

HILO, Hawaii — Police on the Big Island are warning the public about a mail scam.

They say an 82-year-old Hilo man reported receiving a letter from an address in France. It claimed he had won millions of dollars.

According to police, the letter said the winnings would be deposited in the man's bank account and asked for $25,000 in legal fees so an attorney could assist with the transaction.

Police are urging the public to be suspicious of unusual requests for money.
