Auto racing: Denny Hamlin to have knee surgery

Associated Press

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin will have surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee but isn't planning to miss any races.

Joe Gibbs Racing said on Saturday that Hamlin will have the operation Monday, the day after he races at Martinsville Speedway. He is expected to be able to drive again when the Sprint Cup Series stop at Phoenix on April 10.

Next weekend is NASCAR's traditional weekend off for Easter.

Hamlin injured the knee playing basketball in January.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Patrick Connor with OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, N.C.
