North Carolina man collapses atop Mount Nonou, dies

Advertiser Staff

A 65-year-old visitor from North Carolina collapsed and died Sunday after hiking to the top of the Sleeping Giant, Kaua'i County officials reported yesterday.

The man went hiking up Mount Nonou with his son and daughter-in-law Sunday morning. After reaching the top, he sat down at a picnic table, got up to take a picture and collapsed, the county said in a news release.

The man's son administered CPR, and the man briefly regained consciousness.

The daughter-in-law ran down the trail to find someone with a cell phone and contacted police at 10:36 am.

Firefighters from the Kapa'a station responded by climbing up the mountain, while rescue specialists from the Līhu'e Fire Station flew up in the department helicopter.

The man was placed in a litter and flown to Wailua Homesteads Park, from which medics took him to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was planned.
