Alves repeats as player of year

Advertiser Staff

Brigham Young-Hawai'i forward/center Lucas Alves was named Pacific West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year for the third straight year it was announced last night.

Alves, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound senior from Casa Branca, Brazil, missed the first two months of the season after suffering a torn ACL, but rejoined the team in January and helped the Seasiders reach the West Regional final, where they fell to Cal Poly Pomona, 78-75, last night.

He played in 17 games this season, averaging 15.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Alves, last year's Daktronics Division II National Player of the Year, shot 53.4 percent from the field and 71.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Alves is joined by teammate Marques Whippy, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound junior guard, on the All-PacWest first team. HPU senior forward C.J. Jackson (6-8, 265) was named Newcomer of the Year and Dominican guard Austin Bryan (6-4, 190) earned Freshman of the Year honors.

Rounding out the first team are HPU senior guard/forward Mike Helton (6-6, 187), UH-Hilo junior forward Justin Smith (6-6, 205) and Dixie State junior forward Tom Whitehead (6-6, 185).

Dixie State's Jon Judkins repeated as Coach of the Year.
