Man dies after crash inside H-3 tunnel

Advertiser Staff

A man injured in a traffic crash yesterday morning inside the Kāne'ohe-bound side of the Harano Tunnel on H-3 Freeway has died.

Police said the driver involved in the single-vehicle crash, which occurred shortly before 11:15 a.m., was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said the driver, who appeared to be in his late 30s, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Kāne'ohe-bound lanes of the freeway were shut down immediately after the crash and police vehicular homicide investigators were sent to the scene.

The freeway was reopened about 5 p.m.

Shortly after the crash, a turnaround area was opened near the tunnel and Kāne'ohe-bound traffic was rerouted back down the freeway toward Pearl Harbor.
