A March 31 trial has been set for Shayne Souza, one of two Honolulu police officers arrested in Las Vegas last year on marijuana charges.

Souza, 47, is charged with possession of an ounce or less of marijuana and obstructing a police officer, both misdemeanors.

A May 11 preliminary hearing has been scheduled for police officer Kevin Fujioka, 37, who is facing a felony charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence and possession of an ounce or less of marijuana.

The two men were in Las Vegas to participate in a softball tournament and were off duty at the time of their arrests on Aug. 15, 2009.

They were arrested near Desert Breeze Park after Las Vegas Park Police officers noticed a white van parked across several parking stalls and went to investigate. Souza allegedly tried to run away after being told to stand in front of the van in which he and Fujioka were found.

Souza, a 20-year HPD veteran, and Fujioka, a 13-year police veteran, were placed on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of an internal Honolulu Police Department investigation.
