Police charge man in McCully house fire

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu police have charged a 30-year-old man with investigation of arson in the first degree arson of a McCully apartment complex.

Police charged Kevin Yang, of 760 Hauoli Street yesterday at 1:35 p.m. He was being held in a police cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Police believe he is responsible for setting a fire that destroyed a four-unit apartment building in McCully on Friday. The building is on 760 Hauoli St., across from Lunalilo Elementary School.
Soon after the fire was started, a neighbor saw the man with another man walking past the burning home, police said. Yang allegedly was recognized by a neighbor.
Another neighbor later saw the men walking past her home and called the investigating officers. The men were arrested where Yang allegedly confessed to setting fire to the home.
Police are unsure what role the second man played. He was released pending further investigation.
The fire destroyed the second-floor apartments and the first-floor units sustained water damage, firefighters have said.
