Big Island firefighters rescue 2 from overturned catamaran

Advertiser Staff

Two people were rescued yesterday after their catamaran overturned off the Big Island.

Hawaii County firefighters responded to a call at 10 a.m. and the department's Chopper 1 helicopter located the 16- to 18-foot catamaran about five miles offshore in the Papaikou/Onomea area.

Two people clinging to the hull were brought to Hilo Harbor by the fire department's rescue boat.

Firefighters say no one was injured.

They said the catamaran was lost. They estimated its value at $5,000.
