BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — An assistant principal remembers a Hawai'i-based Marine who was killed in Afghanistan as someone who "stood out" even though he attended the high school in Bowling Green for less than two years.

The Department of Defense said 22-year-old Lance Cpl. Timothy J. Poole died Sunday during combat operations in Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force at Kāne'ohe Bay.

Warren East High School assistant principal Edwin Moss told the Daily News that Poole was nice and polite. He said that "some kids just have a presence and you remember them ... he just stood out."

The newspaper reports that Poole grew up in Jacksonville, Fla., but moved to Bowling Green while he was in high school.

Marine recruiter Sgt. Joel Extine said Poole told him he always wanted to be a Marine.
