INDIANAPOLIS — Colts owner Jim Irsay says the team will comply with the NFL's Pro Bowl rules — even if it means players must make a roundtrip flight to Miami on Sunday.

Irsay told The Associated Press last night the team will abide by the league's requirements. Indianapolis still hasn't decided whether the Pro Bowlers will return home Sunday night and then fly back to Miami with their teammates Monday.

Team president Bill Polian called the rule "distasteful" during his weekly radio show Monday.

Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark all said they anticipated being at Sunday's game.

Irsay said the team will follow its traditional plan, "which is comply with league policy and not make a bigger deal out of it than it is."

CARDINALS

WARNER'S FUTURE

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner will hold a news conference tomorrow to announce whether he will retire from the game, his agent said.

Mark Bartelstein, in a telephone interview yesterday, said the announcement will be made at the Cardinals training facility in Tempe. Bartelstein declined to reveal Warner's decision.

The 38-year-old quarterback led the Cardinals to an 11-7 season, including a wild playoff win over Green Bay.

Bills: Buffalo head coach Chan Gailey has hired five new assistants and retained two others. Curtis Modkins will be the offensive coordinator, Bob Bicknell the tight ends coach, and Joe D'Alessandris the offensive line coach. Giff Smith will be a defensive assistant and Kevin Patullo in charge of offensive quality control. George Catavolos remains the secondary coach, and Bob Sanders will continue to serve on the defensive staff.

Giants: Veteran assistant Robert Nunn has been hired to coach the New York Giants' defensive line. Coach Tom Coughlin announced yesterday that Nunn, who spent the last 10 seasons in the NFL, would be replacing Mike Waufle, who was fired.

Jaguars: Jacksonville fired defensive line coach Ted Monachino and replaced him with Joe Cullen. Monachino, who had been with the team the last four seasons, essentially became the scapegoat for a defense that was last in the NFL in sacks with 14.

Obituary: Former San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl punter Tom Wittum, who was drafted by the Chicago White Sox but opted for a standout baseball and football career at Northern Illinois, has died. He was 60. Wittum died of cancer last Friday at his home in the Chicago suburb of Antioch.
