UH volleyball stays No. 9

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team remained No. 9 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

USC is again atop the poll, while Stanford moved up one spot to No. 2.

Cal State Northridge is now No. 3, followed by BYU, Penn State, UCLA, UC Irvine, Long Beach State and Hawai'i.

FOUR QUALIFIERS ADVANCE

Tsung-Hua Yang of Taipei upset the No. 1 seed Daniel King-Turner of New Zealand, 6-3, 6-4, for a berth in today's main draw of the Honolulu Challenger, a $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event at the Pasty T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Also advancing to the main draw were: No. 2 seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who beat American Brian Battistone, 6-1, 6-2; No. 5 seed Nikola Mektic of Croatia, who upset No. 3 seed American Tim Smyczek, 6-3, 7-6 (3); and Kona resident Jan Michael Gambill who ousted Martin Slanar from Austria, 6-3, 6-3.

Main draw action begins today at 10 a.m.

KAUA'I'S HIGHT ON U.S. TEAM

Halfpipe riders Greg Bretz and Kaua'i-born Elena Hight have been added to the U.S. Olympic Snowboarding team.

The full team was announced yesterday, and also includes 2006 snowboardcross silver medalist Lindsey Jacobellis and gold medalist Seth Wescott.
