UH regents to weigh parts of Mauna Kea management plan

Hawaii Tribune Herald

The University of Hawaii Board of Regents will consider two aspects of the Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan when it meets next Thursday.

Regents are expected to vote on approving an observatory decommissioning subplan and a public access subplan for Mauna Kea.

If the subplans are approved, they and two other subplans relating to the mountain's natural and cultural resources, would face approval by the Board of Land and Natural Resources.

The land board last April approved the Mauna Kea CMP and ordered the university to develop the four subplans within a year. Opponents of the plan filed a lawsuit in late 2009 but a court dismissed it on jurisdictional grounds.

The regents' meeting begins at 9:15 a.m. at Maui Community College.
