FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Tom Brady has pulled out of the Pro Bowl after a season in which he played with rib and finger injuries. He has been replaced by Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans.

The NFL announced the change of AFC backup quarterbacks yesterday. Brady and the rest of the New England Patriots had physicals after their 33-14 opening-round playoff loss to Baltimore on Jan. 10.

Brady played in all 16 regular-season games and completed 371 of 565 passes for 4,398 yards, 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

In the playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens, he completed 23 of 42 passes for 154 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Brady was asked about the Pro Bowl after the game and said, "We'll have to see. We have our exit physicals tomorrow, so we'll see what comes up."

Schaub, named to his first Pro Bowl, completed 396 of 583 passes for 4,770 yards, all the most in the NFL. He threw for 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

PRO BOWL CHANGES

• Steve Smith will be the first New York Giants receiver since 2006 in the Pro Bowl when he replaces Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald (knee injury) on the NFC team.

• San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore has been added to the NFC squad, replacing St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson (sore back).

• Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (right shoulder) turned down a chance to play in the Pro Bowl as a first alternate.

DOLPHINS

The Miami Dolphins have unveiled the latest name for their home: Sun Life Stadium. A five-year naming rights agreement with the Toronto-based financial services company was confirmed at a news conference yesterday at the stadium. The change takes effect in time for the stadium's upcoming high-profile NFL games — the Pro Bowl next week, and the Super Bowl on Feb. 7.

PLAYOFF SHORTS

New York Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis missed practice because of a broken left hand, but he is expected to play in the AFC championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. ... Cornerback Jerraud Powers sat out yesterday's practice with a foot injury, the only Colts player to miss the entire workout.
