Reyno's hat trick propels Mililani

It was a dominating performance by a team that has dominated league play the past two seasons.

Mililani defeated Pearl City, 5-1, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West Division girls soccer game last night at Pearl City High School.

"We had an opportunity today to lock in our lineup and lock in some of the things we worked on: our shape and our formation," Mililani coach Ray Akiona said. "I was really proud of them, the way we played the first half. It was the kind of things we wanted to put into game situations."

Mililani (11-0-0), which already won the West, knocked Pearl City (5-2-4) out of contention for a coveted top two finish; the top two in each division get a bye for the first round of next week's OIA Tournament. Kapolei (7-1-3) beat Waialua, 7-0, yesterday to clinch second place.

Mililani has won 25 of its past 26 games against OIA teams, with its lone "blemish" a tie against Kapolei in the final game of the 2008-09 regular season. The Trojans went 14-0-1 (11-0-1 regular season) against OIA competition last season and won the league.

Their last league loss was to Pearl City in the 2007 OIA Championship game.

Last night, Mililani freshman T.J. Reyno scored the first of her three goals in the third minute after stealing the ball off a Pearl City miscommunication, dribbled into the 18-yard box and shot a low ball into the net.

"We accomplished our defense by forcing them in, and just holding possession and finding some connecting passes to score," said Reyno, who leads the division with 16 goals.

Reyno scored again five minutes later. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Uehara crossed the ball from the right side to senior forward Mari Miyashiro. With one touch, Miyashiro sent the ball along for Reyna, who put it in from the far-left post.

"We wanted to work on finding each other," said Reyno, of fine-tuning the Trojans' attack heading into the postseason.

In the 13th minute a Pearl City defender tried to clear a Miyashiro cross and instead shot the ball into the Chargers' goal.

In the 22nd minute, Reyno scored her third goal on a cross from junior midfielder Kristen Nakagawa, who drove to the endline to set up the goal.

Miyashiro scored on a breakaway to start the second half.

Pearl City scored on a goal by junior forward Alyssa Nagai in the 55th minute, after she chased down a through pass down the right flank and challenged the goalkeeper before putting it into the open net.
