John White, former chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, announced yesterday he is running for the Honolulu City Council's 2nd District seat.

The area encompasses Mililani Mauka, Wahiawä, the North Shore, Kahalu'u and 'Ähuimanu. It is now held by Donovan Dela Cruz, who is completing his eighth straight year on the council and therefore cannot seek a third consecutive term.

White, an 'Ähuimanu resident, said his campaign will focus on jobs, local food and agriculture, and affordable housing.

White, who is making his first run for elective office, also once worked for the late Councilman Duke Bainum.

He was born in Hawai'i, and his family moved to Arkansas when he was 6. He returned to Hawai'i in 2000.
