BOE panel to develop superintendent search process

Advertiser Staff

The state Board of Education has appointed a seven-member committee to develop a search process for a new schools superintendent.

The Ad Hoc Committee on Superintendent Search Process will be chaired by Carol Mon Lee, with Eileen Clarke serving as vice chairwoman, according to a BOE news release. Members also include Maggie Cox, Kim Coco Iwamoto, Karen Knudsen, John Penebacker and Herbert Watanabe.
The committee will hold its first meeting Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. at the BOE meeting room at the Queen Liliçuokalani building on Miller Street.
On Jan. 11, the BOE appointed Kathryn Matayoshi, a former deputy superintendent, to serve as interim superintendent of the Hawaii State Department of Education following the retirement of former Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto.
Matayoshi will serve a six-month term while the BOE conducts a search for a new superintendent. BOE members passed a resolution last week to conduct a national search in a three-month time span. It is still unclear how much such a search would cost.
