Fishing: Applications being accepted for Mike Sakamoto scholarship

Advertiser Staff

Applications are being accepted for the Mike Sakamoto Memorial Scholarship from now until Feb. 28.

Sakamoto, a local fishing icon best known as host/producer of the Fishing Tales television program, passed away last January.
The Mike Sakamoto Memorial Scholarship fund was developed by the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group (PIFG), a non-profit 501(c) 3.

The program will award students $10,000 in scholarship funds.

A tireless advocate for the sports of fishing and diving, Sakamoto dedicated much of his time to the protection of fishing traditions and rights. The scholarship is intended to carry on Mike Sakamoto’s work and philosophy toward improving Hawaii’s ocean resources.

For more information and tournament applications please go to PIFG’s website www.fishtoday.org or call Stefanie Sakamoto (Mike’s daughter) at (808) 387-5501.
