California deploying search-and-rescue team

Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is deploying a specially trained search-and-rescue team to Haiti after a powerful earthquake devastated the country.

Jay Alan, a spokesman at the California Emergency Management Agency, says the team is expected to leave Wednesday afternoon.
The Republican governor says his agency will work closely with the federal government if it asks California to offer additional assistance.
California’s 70-member rescue team is equipped to conduct around-the-clock search and rescue operations. Its members include firefighters, paramedics, emergency room physicians, structural engineers, heavy equipment specialists, hazardous materials technicians and search dogs.
