Bollywood fest returning to Doris Duke

The Bollywood Film Festival will be back this month at Doris Duke Theatre, at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, with 10 of Mumbai’s best, including new releases and premieres from 2009 and 2008.
On opening and closing nights, Jan. 23 and March 2, Bombay Restaurant will be serving food for purchase; wine, beer and soda will be available for purchase from the Academy’s Pavilion Café.

This year’s lineup includes a tribute to master filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, director of “The Blue Umbrella,” “Maqbool,” and “Kaminey” (the Doris Duke screened his film masterpiece “Omkara” in 2008). Fans of the “Slumdog Millionaire-style” of Indian film, won’t want to miss these three cinematic gems.
Indian cinema is increasingly breaking away from musicals, so along with films that epitomize this film genre—highly stylized family-centric romantic comedies with dazzling dance numbers. The festival includes critically acclaimed films based on Indian epics and novels, as well as a Shakespearean tragedy, Mumbai noir, socially conscious cinema, and an indie production.
