Firefighters still battling two large blazes on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Big Island firefighters continue to battle two large fires — one a 1,000-acre forest fire on Kealakekua Ranch and the other a 1,700-acre brush fire on Hokukano Ranch. The fires are still not contained, but there have been no serious injuries or buildings damaged.

Battalion Chief (west) Marshall Luke said a total of 10 firefighters are working the fires this morning and more may be brought up this afternoon.

He said bulldozer breaks have been established around both fires and fire crews are manning the break lines. He said the fires were not contained and "could jump at any time."

Luke said the Kealakekua fire was in heavy timber. That fire has been burning since Dec. 23.

The Hokukano fire has been burning since Dec. 17.
