By 7 a.m. on Maui, a miles-long line of cars was stacked on Hana Highway headed toward higher ground on Haleakala Highway.

Laurie Merandi, 45, of Pittsburgh, said she and her party arrived this morning. She said she called the Wailea Marriott and was told that as long they arrived by 10 a.m. it wouldn’t be a problem.
“You can’t help but think back to what happened in Phuket (Thailand and the devastating 2004 tsunami),” she said. “But I don’t think this will be anything like that. Knowing the locals are calm makes us more calm.”
There were long lines at gas stations, and about 100 customers were waiting when the Costco in Kahului opened at 7:30 a.m.
