Kapa'a stops University High in DII opener, 56-55

After missing her first free throw with 11.8 seconds left in a tied game, Jessilyn Artaho-Aki thought her second attempt would miss as well.

"I ignored everybody that was yelling," said Artaho-Aki, whose Kapa'a teammates reminded her to focus during the timeout before the free throws.

She made the second attempt and University High's Quynne Eharis missed from point-blank range with about 3 seconds left as Kapa'a won, 56-55, in last night's first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II Girls Basketball State Championships at Farrington High School.

"Three of our games we had in the regular season, our scenario was just like this — last second shot," said Kapa'a coach Terry Maguire, whose Warriors (9-1) face third-seeded Sacred Hearts (15-0) in a quarterfinal game at Farrington at 7 p.m. today. "It's been a heart attack."

Kapa'a lost a 13-point first-half lead as Eharis' 33 points helped the Jr. Rainbows (10-9) lead by eight with 2:27 left. Nobody could keep up with the 5-foot-11 junior post, whose team cleared the lane, isolated her at the top, then passed as she drove inside the entire night.

University High called a timeout after Artaho-Aki's free throw, brought the ball down the court, then passed inside to Eharis from the left wing. Her shot bounced on the rim and the ball was tipped around until time expired.

"It would've been her perfect night," Maguire said of Eharis. "She hadn't missed all night. She does it with her hustle."

Artaho-Aki finished with 18 points and Mahea Hanie-Grace and Ashlyn Lee added 10 each for Kapa'a.

"It shows they don't give up and really have it in them to follow to the end," Maguire said.

University High coach Bryan Nakamura was proud of his team, which battled back last night like it had all season. He lost four players to ACL injuries this season and at one point had to move up two junior varsity players just to field a six-person team. More JV players were brought up later in the season and the Jr. Rainbows had to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's postseason tournament to grab the league's fourth and final berth.

"We were kind of getting out of our comfort zone, playing their style," Nakamura said of the first half. "In the second half, we settled down and got into our comfort zone."
