Winter Olympics: Men's, women's downhill training canceled

Associated Press

WHISTLER, British Columbia — The men's and women's Olympic downhill training runs scheduled for Friday have been canceled because of overnight rain.

The men's run was supposed to be skiers' final look at the course before Saturday's downhill, the opening race on the Alpine schedule at the Vancouver Games. The men already did have one full training session on Thursday, meaning the race can go on as planned weather permitting.

The start of Friday's downhill training for women was delayed twice before being scrapped. The first women's training session Thursday was called off because of heavy fog and snow after only two racers.

The men were scheduled to have three downhill practice runs, but only Thursday's was completed. Wednesday's session was called off because of fog after only 42 of 87 scheduled racers skied the Olympic course.

The forecast is for rain or snow for much of Saturday.
