The Moanalua boys basketball team lost its momentum in the second period last night against Leilehua.

The game was getting close and Na Menehune players were getting frustrated with one another.

Marcus Monroe, Moanalua's star player, then restored order with his play and leadership.

Monroe scored 12 of his 19 points in the third period and Keven Amaral added 15 points as Moanalua beat Leilehua, 66-39, in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference tournament.

"I feel like this is my year, my co-captains' year," said Monroe, a 6-foot-4 senior. "We're fighting and living for the moment."

Moanalua, which led by 18 early in the second period, let Leilehua get within 26-17 at halftime.

As Leilehua got closer, Na Menehune "kind of lost focus and started arguing with each other when we made mistakes," Monroe said. "Coach pulled us to the side and told us to get our stuff together. We can't have all this fighting on the court.

"It was nothing. I have to lead this team. I talked to them and they listened."

Led by Monroe, Na Menehune outscored the Mules 25-12 in the third to take control.

"I was like 'Coach, you know, I'm feeling it,' " Monroe said. "I was telling my guys let's pull away."

Moanalua, the East champion, will host West runner-up Campbell tomorrow in the double-elimination tournament. The winner will earn a berth in the State Division I tournament.

"All we care about is winning on Friday, and that's going to be tough to do," said Moanalua coach Greg Tacon. "Our goal at the beginning of the season was to make the state tournament. We don't care what position it is in the OIA."

Moanalua (12-1) made seven of its first eight field-goal attempts to take a 15-6 lead with 2:35 left in the first period against Leilehua.

Na Menehune extended the lead to 24-6 after Amaral's basket with 6:53 left before halftime. Then they went cold and Leilehua, the West's No. 4 team, heated up.

The Mules scored 11 points in a row to get within 24-17 with 3:26 left before halftime. Carlos Marshall and Brent Lemon both hit 3-pointers during the surge.

At that time, Tacon said his players started to "chirp on each other and we weren't together."

Leilehua (9-5) could have gotten even closer, but it went 1 of 7 from the free-throw line in the second period.

The Mules finished 10 of 31 from the line.

"I think if we hit our free throws ... That's not going to win you any ball games," said Leilehua coach Keith Spencer. "If we hit our free throws we could have done other things I wanted to do."

Spencer added he wanted to keep the game "down in the 40s" and "didn't want to run up and down with them."

Moanalua's largest lead was 65-34 with 3 minutes remaining in the game.

Martin Hall scored seven points to lead Leilehua, which will host Waipahu tomorrow at 6 p.m. in an elimination game.
