Oscar-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr. says he is being treated for prostate cancer.

In the announcement yesterday, Gossett said the disease was caught early and he expects to make a full recovery.

The 73-year-old actor said he is going public about the disease because there is not enough emphasis in the African-American community on fighting it with preventive examinations and early treatment.

Gossett has appeared in dozens of films. He won an Oscar for best supporting actor in 1983 for his portrayal of the no-nonsense Navy flight school sergeant who whips Richard Gere into shape in "An Officer and a Gentleman."

His memoir, "An Actor and a Gentleman," is scheduled to be published this year.

WHITE STRIPES CLAIM SONG WAS MISUSED

The White Stripes say the Air Force Reserve used one of their songs without permission in a Super Bowl ad, and that they are insulted their song was used to encourage recruitment during a war they don't support.

They did not specify which war.

The two-member band, which is originally from Detroit, said in a statement posted to its Web site that the ad made unauthorized use of their song "Fell in Love With a Girl."

The Air Force Reserve, in a statement, denied the song was the White Stripes' and said it had hired a company through its advertising agency to score original music for the commercial.

JOLIE MEETS WITH HAITI QUAKE VICTIMS

Angelina Jolie began two days of meetings with Haiti earthquake victims yesterday in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency.

The actress, representing the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, met with U.N. officials in Port-au-Prince and visited an SOS Villages camp for orphans outside the capital, where she was cheered by Haitians yelling, "Angie! Angie!"

That same camp took care of 33 Haitian children after a U.S.-based Baptist group was arrested at the Dominican border trying to take the kids out of the country. It wasn't known if Jolie spoke with any of the children, and journalists were kept at a distance throughout her visit.

The 22-year-old wife of tennis star Andy Roddick said being chosen for the cover, on newsstands yesterday, is "the news of a lifetime."
