Hanging up on reporters, ‘talking story’ with kids

Advertiser Staff

Here’s a brief collection of reflections about Frank Fasi as posted on www.honoluluadvertiser.com or the honadv Twitter account:
• A reporter in this town hadn't made it until Frank Fasi hung up on you. I smiled a lot that day, and I'm smiling now thinking back on it. —Gordon Y.K. Pang, The Honolulu Advertiser

• I was an Advertiser newsboy stationed at the corner of Nuuanu and School Streets on weekends. Frank F. Fasi always bought a paper from me dressed in a dark suit and his jet black hair combed back. Told me to work fast, watch the light at the intersection, and watch the traffic. In those days, adults did not talk to kids very much, but he did. — Wayne Hinano Brumaghim.
• Back in the days, I remember as kid I met Mr. Fasi at my dad’s tailor shop in Chinatown. He would come in to do alterations and also take the time to "talk story" with me. Back then as a kid I knew nothing about politics but thinking back now he has done a lot for the community and people of Oahu. —Steven Hsu, Fremont, Calif.
