Kansas men reclaim top spot in AP poll

Associated Press

After three weeks of not being No. 1, Kansas moved back to the top of The Associated Press' college basketball poll.

The Jayhawks (20-1) were No. 1 in the preseason Top 25 and for the first eight weeks of the regular season. They moved back into the top spot yesterday, receiving 54 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel.

The other three Division I teams with one loss — Villanova, Syracuse and Kentucky — were second through fourth.

Villanova and Syracuse both moved up one place to second and third. The Wildcats (19-1) received four first-place votes while the Orange (21-1) got six.

Kentucky was a unanimous No. 1 last week but dropped to fourth after losing to South Carolina, its first loss of the season. The Wildcats (20-1) had one first-place vote.

Kansas fell from No. 1 to third after losing at Tennessee. Since then, the Jayhawks have won six straight.

Michigan State was fifth, followed by West Virginia, Georgetown, Purdue and Texas, which dropped from sixth to ninth.

Duke and Kansas State tied for 10th.

MEN'S TOP 25

No. 9 Texas 72, Oklahoma St. 60: Freshman swingman Jordan Hamilton scored a career-high 27 points and visiting Texas (19-3, 5-2 Big 12) beat Oklahoma State (16-6, 4-4). The Longhorns fell behind by 11 in the first half before Hamilton got going, scoring all but two of his points in the final 22 minutes.

WOMEN'S POLL

UCONN STILL NO. 1

Connecticut now stands alone at No. 1 in every way.

UConn (21-0) was the top choice in The Associated Press women's basketball poll for a record 37th straight week, surpassing Louisiana Tech (1980-82) for the longest streak atop the Top 25. The Huskies again were the unanimous choice as the top team, receiving 40 first-place votes yesterday.

Stanford remained No. 2 while Notre Dame was third. Nebraska moved up to No. 4 and Tennessee was fifth.

The Huskies started their current streak at No. 1 in the poll on Feb. 18, 2008.

WOMEN'S TOP 25

No. 3 Notre Dame 75, Rutgers 63: Skylar Diggins scored 14 points and Becca Bruszewski added 13 to help visiting Notre Dame (20-1, 7-1 Big East) beat Rutgers (12-9, 4-4). Melissa Lechlitner added 12 points for Notre Dame, which beat Rutgers for the first time since 2005.

No. 15 Florida State 83, No. 9 North Carolina 73: Jacinta Monroe scored 16 points and visiting Florida State (19-4, 5-2 ACC) beat North Carolina (16-4, 4-2). Courtney Ward added 13 points for the Seminoles.
