Gymnast Yee is national qualifier

Joshua Yee, a 15-year-old Level 10 gymnast from the Hawaiian Island Twisters, captured third in the all-around at the men's U.S. Gymnastics Region 1 Championship and qualified for the men's National championship in Knoxville, Tenn.

Yee earned third place on the high bar, fourth on the rings, fifth on the pommel horse, seventh on the parallel bars, 10th on the vault, and 15th on the floor against 65 other gymnasts in his 14-15 age division at the regionals April 15 to 18 in San Diego. The Level 10 Junior Olympic Men's Nationals will be held May 6 to 10.

In all, 20 Hawai'i male gymnasts competed at San Diego, all qualifying during the Hawai'i State Junior Olympic Gymnastics Championships.

The regionals featured more than 700 male gymnasts from Arizona, Nevada, California and Hawai'i between the ages of 7 and 18 competing in 11 age/skill level competitions.

Two other Hawai'i gymnasts, Makana Wong and Michael Leong, also medaled at the regionals.

Wong took first in the all around in the Level 5 (10-year-old division). He placed first on the pommel horse, vault and high bar events, third on the rings, fourth on the parallel bars, and eighth on the floor. He competed against 65 other gymnasts in his division after just 1 [0xbd] years of involvement in the sport.

Leong took seventh on the vault in the Level 7 (10-11) Division.

HILO TEAM SECOND AT SENIOR TENNIS

A tennis team from Hilo finished second at the USTA League 6.0 Super Senior National Championships at Surprise, Ariz., last week.

The team defeated a team from Ft. Myers, Fla., 2-1, in the semifinals before falling to Tucson, Ariz., 3-0, in the championship. Hilo advanced by winning its round-robin flight.

The team was captained by Jane Iida and its members included Oarlene Wingate, Janice Nakahara, Eunice Hashimoto, Lucy Makuakane, Lynne Miura, Susan Proctor and Debbie Shigehara.

FUN RUN: Today is the early registration deadline for the ninth annual Jamba BananaMan Chase, a race involving guest runners dressed in banana costumes to be held May 8. The fee is $25, but after today, the cost will be $30. Sign up online by going to www.active.com. Entry forms also are available at Jamba Hawaii locations (excluding UH Mānoa) and must be postmarked by today. Participants can register at www.active.com until May 3. Runners can still enter on race day between 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m at Magic Island.

Registration for the Mānoa Boys Basketball League will be held Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon at Mānoa Valley District Park. The league runs during the fall and is for youth ages 7 to 17 whose birth years are from 1993 to 2003. Fee is $85 and there are no refunds.
