Obituary: Victoria Manalo Draves, 1st woman diver to win 2 Olympic golds

Associated Press

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Victoria Manalo Draves, the first woman to win two gold medals in diving in the same Olympics and the first Asian-American medal winner, has died. She was 85.

The former Olympian died on April 11 at Desert Regional Medical Center from complications of pancreatic cancer, said Lyle Draves, her husband and coach.

Draves, whose father was Filipino and mother was English, took gold in the three-meter springboard and the 10-meter platform competitions in London in 1948.

Life magazine named Draves and decathlon gold medal winner Bob Mathias the top U.S. athletes at the 1948 Games.

Draves performed in Larry Crosby's "Rhapsody in Swimtime" aquatic show at Soldier Field in Chicago in 1948 and went on to appear in other shows, touring the U.S. and Europe with Buster Crabbe's "Aqua Parade."

She was inducted in 1969 into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Besides her husband of 64 years, Draves is survived by their sons, David, Jeffrey, Dale and Kim; eight grandchildren; and her twin sister, Consuelo Sessions.
