Federal grant will assist Hawaii traffic safety efforts

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i will get more than $1 million from the federal government for traffic safety programs that encourage seat belt use and safe and sober driving, Sens. Daniel K. Inouye and Daniel K. Akaka announced yesterday.

The $1,032,254 comes from a grant from the National Highway Safety Administration.

The grant provisions allow each county to identify their most pressing traffic safety issue and address it with the help of federal money.

"Each year we watch as senseless, preventable injuries and deaths occur on Hawai'i's roads," Inouye said in a statement. "These funds will help the counties focus their traffic safety efforts where the need exists."

"This grant will provide police with resources to increase traffic safety in Hawai'i," Akaka said in a statement.
