Rapp takes first, qualifies for gymnastics nationals

 •  Sister act brings home national titles

Tamara Rapp took first place and was one of several Hawai'i gymnasts to qualify for nationals during the Junior Olympic Region 2 Championships held in Auburn, Wash., early this month.

Rapp, of the Hawaiian Island Twisters, competed in the Level 10 Junior C Division and captured first place on the bars and floor exercise, second on the beam and seventh on the vault.

In all, 44 Hawai'i female gymnasts competed in the event, which drew about 400 level 8-10 gymnasts from Alaska, Hawai'i, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

Level 9 qualifiers will advance to the Western Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa, next week, and Level 10 Nationals will be held in Dallas in May.

OTHER LEVEL 10

In Level 10, the top seven qualify, providing the gymnast meets a minimum all-around qualifying score.

Senior D Division: Seniors Keolamau Yee and Mackenzie Sato qualified for the National Championships by earning fourth and sixth place, respectively. Yee's highest placement was third in the vault. Sato won the floor exercise title. Both will continue their gymnastics careers in college with Yee (Punahou) attending the University of Pennsylvania and Sato ('Iolani), Cornell University.

Senior A: Jordyn Lee seventh; Stephanie Goya 14th.

Senior B: Carson Tabiolo sixth; Tiana Montell seventh overall.

Junior A: Allison Bushman fifth, including third in floor; Kiana Palin sixth.

Junior B: Lauren Nagao seventh.

Junior D: Kelli Nakashima sixth.

LEVEL 9

In Level 9, the top six qualify, providing the gymnast meets a minimum all-around qualifying score.

Junior 1: Lauren Lauro second, including first on the bars and second on vault; Amanda LaPenes fifth.

Junior 3: Danaea Davis seventh, including third on vault. She was named an alternate.

Junior 7: Tracie Villanueva third overall, including first on bars and second on beam; Chanel Onaga eighth, including third on beam.

Junior 8: Nicole Aviles third, including second in vault and third on bars.

Senior 2: Kristin Hayashida seventh, including first on vault and second on beam. She was named an alternate. K. Cenido-Niheu eighth, including third on vault.

Senior 4: Kaili Akeo ninth.

Senior 7: Kayla Chee seventh.

Senior 8: Taryn Chun fourth, including first on bars and second on vault.

LEVEL 8

In Level 8, there is no further championship.

The All-Star Level 8 Hawaii State Team earned its highest team placement to date with a second-place finish.

Senior A: Leah Miyasato 32nd.

Senior C: Elizabeth Eader third, including second on vault.

Junior A: Madison Benzor ninth, including a second on vault; Nicole Cristobal 12th; Maela Lazaro 14th, including third on bars; Sarah Barron 19th; Chloe Camello 21st; Miya Makabe 26th; Summer Lecher 29th.

Junior B: Viktoriya Rizvanova sixth, including first in beam; Kimi Crabtree eighth, including second on floor; Shannon Carvalho 17th; Jessica Lee 22nd; Maeve Geraghty 25th; Kaili Yuen 28th.

Junior C: Sydney Jalali fifth, including first in vault; Gabrielle James took eighth, including fourth on bars; Leiana Clemente ninth, including third on beam; Savannah Udac 13; Madeline Nilson 17th, including first on vault; Deja Malone 21st; Katherine Norris 28th.
