Clock's ticking to register to vote in special election

Advertiser Staff

Today is the last day for new voters to register in next month's special election to fill former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie's vacated 1st Congressional District seat.

Abercrombie resigned from the post last month to run for governor. Democrats Ed Case and Colleen Hanabusa and Republican Charles Djou are vying to succeed Abercrombie.

Registration forms are available at satellite city halls, post offices and public libraries. Forms are also available on the state Office of Elections website, hawaii.gov/elections.

The forms must be returned postmarked no later than today.

Most people who voted in recent Hawai'i elections do not have to re-register. Voters who do have to register again are those who have moved or changed their name since the last election.

The election will be conducted via mail. Registered voters will be mailed a packet with a vote-by-mail ballot and a return envelope. The packets will be mailed approximately 20 days before the election. Ballots must be returned in the envelopes provided by 6 p.m. on May 22.

Voters requiring an accessible voting machine are eligible for walk-in voting at the Office of the City Clerk from May 10 to May 20.
