Hundreds turned out at Pokai Bay in Waianae this morning to welcome home the E Ala, an inter-island voyaging canoe.

The canoe was built at and launched from Pokai Bay in June 1982.

It sat idle for much of the past decade on Sand Island.

Plans now call for the refurbished E Ala to be used as a floating classroom for Waianae Coast students in hopes it will help spark an interest in Hawaii's seafaring legacy.
