HPU baseball clinches tie for PacWest title

Kenny Turner and Bas Nooij drove in two runs apiece as Hawai'i Pacific beat Grand Canyon, 6-2, yesterday in the first game of a doubleheader at Phoenix to clinch a tie for the Pacific West Conference title.

It was HPU's first conference title in history.

Toby Inouye pitched a five-hitter for the Sea Warriors.

In the second game, Colin Courtland, Danny Bethea and Billy Schroeder each drove in two runs as Grand Canyon beat HPU, 7-4. Blake Amaral had two RBIs for the Sea Warriors.

HPU moved to 28-10 and 20-4; Grand Canyon is 26-20 and 16-12.

TENNIS

BYU-HAWAI'I WOMEN CLAIM PACWEST TITLE

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team beat Hawai'i Pacific, 5-1, yesterday in the final of the Pacific West Conference Championships at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.

The Seasiders were the defending PacWest champions and top seeds.

Seasiders junior Elwen Li finished undefeated in both doubles and singles, and was named the tournament's MVP.

Chaminade senior Tiffany DeVincent earned the Sportsmanship Award.

Chaminade beat Dixie State, 5-1, for third; and Academy of Art took fifth by edging Grand Canyon, 5-4; and Hawai'i-Hilo took seventh by beating Dominican, 5-0.

SOFTBALL

UH-HILO, HAWAI'I PACIFIC SPLIT PAIR IN PACWEST

Dana Lee drove in two runs as host Hawai'i-Hilo beat Hawai'i Pacific, 4-3, yesterday to earn a split of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader.

Christina Pedroza pitched an eight-hitter for the Vulcans, who fell behind 3-0 after the top of the first inning. Sarah Weisskopf drove in Amanda Tellez with the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.

In the first game, Sherise Musquiz pitched a four-hitter with one walk and three strikeouts as HPU beat Hilo, 2-0.

Hilo is 30-13 and 18-8; HPU is 36-5 and 21-3.

GOLF

HAWAI'I MEN 12TH AT WESTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is 12th — and last — after shooting 761 on Day 1 of the Western Intercollegiate yesterday at Santa Cruz, Calif.

Hawai'i's top golfer is Cory Oride, who is tied for 25th after a 5-over 145 at Pasatiempo Golf Course.

Oregon leads the team standings with a 692. UCLA is two strokes back.

The third and final round will be today.

WATER POLO

HAWAI'I WOMEN TOPPLE SAN JOSE STATE IN FINALE

Carmen Eggens scored four goals as the No. 5 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team wrapped up its regular season yesterday by beating San Jose State, 6-5, at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Hawai'i improved to 16-6 overall and 4-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The No. 6 Spartans, who led 3-1 in the first period, are 16-11 and 2-4.
