Foodbank holding 2010 drive Saturday

Hawaii Foodbank will hold its 2010 food drive on Saturday at shopping centers and other locations around the state.

The event is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Foodbank welcomes donations of canned goods and money. which is used to buy food at bulk rates.

Drop-off locations on O'ahu include Waterfront Plaza, Koko Marina Center, Town Center of Mililani, McCully Shopping Center, Pearl Highlands Shopping Center, Pearl City Shopping Center, Windward City Shopping Center, Waianae Mall and Waiokeola Congregational Church in Kāhala.

More than 183,000 needy island families, children, seniors, men and women each week receive Hawaii Foodbank goods through its network of 250 member agencies.

ISLE STUDENT NAMED TRUMAN SCHOLAR

Shelle Shimizu, a Mililani High School graduate attending Macalaster College in St. Paul, Minn., has been named a Truman Scholar for 2010.

Shimizu, a junior majoring in political science and Asian studies, is one of 60 students from 54 U.S. colleges and universities to earn the scholarship.

Shimizu will be a Public Policy and International Affairs fellow at Princeton University this summer, after which she plans to serve in the Peace Corps. She hopes to pursue a law degree and Masters in Public Policy at Columbia University.

A news release from Macalaster College says Shimizu, who is currently studying abroad in China, eventually hopes to work both domestically and internationally to alleviate poverty.

Each Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 for graduate study. Recipients also receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at top graduate schools.

The Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as a federal memorial to President Harry S. Truman.

MOPED DRIVER, 20, CRITICALLY INJURED

A 20-year-old man was critically injured Thursday night in a moped crash on Nimitz Highway.

Police said the man is a member of the U.S. Coast Guard. The crash occurred about 11:25 p.m., at the intersection of Nimitz and Waiakamilo Road.

Police said the man lost control of his moped and hit the curb.

The man, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. Police say alcohol might have been a factor in the crash.

KAILUA HIGH ALUMNI HOSTING DANCE TODAY

The Kailua High Alumni Association is hosting a Spring Sock Hop from 5 to 9:30 p.m. today at Kailua Intermediate School, 145 S. Kainalu Drive.

The dance will feature music by Frankie and the Drive-Inns with Frank Kam, Rich Jones, Mark Scrufari and Tony Jeffery playing hits from the '50s, '60s and '70s.
