University of Hawaii honorary degrees to go to Intel co-founder, wife

HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii plans to give honorary degrees to Intel co-founder Gordon Moore and his wife.

The university's Board of Regents voted Thursday to award the Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters to Gordon and Betty Moore.

The couple's foundation has provided $215 million toward the design and construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope atop Mauna Kea.

The telescope is expected to be the world's biggest when it's completed in 2018.

The part-time residents of the Big Island have also supported UH biology and nursing programs.

UH Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw says generous support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is critical to sustaining the school's world-class research in astronomy, oceanography and marine science.
