Rainbows' Capaul shuts out Fresno State, 4-0

Collin Bennett drove in two runs and Kolten Wong scored twice to back the strong pitching of Alex Capaul today to lead Hawai'i over Fresno State, 4-0, to avoid a four-game Western Athletic Conference series sweep before sellout crowd of 2,623 (4,417 tickets issued) at Les Murakami Stadium.

Capaul (5-1) allowed seven hits and walked one with five strikeouts for his first career shutout and complete game for the Rainbows (17-15 overall, 1-3 WAC).

Charlie Robertson (2-2) allowed four runs, eight hit and three walks with one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings for the Bulldogs

(20-13, 3-1), , who had a seven-game win streak snapped.

The Rainbows jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, Greg Garcia singled before Kolten Wong and David Freitas each drew four-pitch walks to load the bases. Collin Bennett's two-run single to left moved Freitas to second. Christian Johnson's single to left loaded the bases again. Jeffrey Van Doornum grounded to third for force at home to reload the bases, but Kevin Macdonald struck out to end the inning.

Hawai'i added a run in the second. Roquemore singled with one out, took second on Garcia's single and scored on Wong's single that moved Garcia up to second.

The Rainbows scored again in the fourth. Wong walked with one out, ending Robertson's day for Cody Kendall. Wong stole second and took third when Freitas flied out to right. Bennett walked to put runners at the corners. Johnson walked to load the bases. A wild pitch moved the runners and increased UH's lead to 4-0.
