PEANUT FAIRYTALE

Local theater company 'Ohi'a Productions is staging a revival of the late Lisa Matsumoto's beloved musical "The Princess and the Iso Peanut," which was first performed — with Matsumoto as a cast member — in 1999 at Diamond Head Theatre.

The play, which opens today at Hawai'i Theatre, is a twist on the typical happily-ever-after fairytales: Princess Alexis is being forced to wed a man she can't stand, while embarking on a journey to find true love with a local Japanese prince.

There's family drama, a perilous boat trip, a band of pirates and plenty of communication breakdown as the princess tries to understand her beloved prince's pidgin, and he tries to brush up on his Shakespeare.

"The Princess and the Iso Peanut" / Hawai'i Theatre, 1130 Bethel St. / today-April 18 / 7 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays; special 2 p.m. matinee tomorrow / $15-$30 / www.hawaiitheatre.com, 528-0506
